Five Star General has bid farewell to the racetrack.
Horse racing fans have had the pleasure of watching Five Star General run for the last seven years. He raced thirty-nine times from 2018 to 2024, winning thirteen races and finishing second or third in fifteen others. He was victorious in seven stakes, including the British Columbia Derby (G3), and placed in seven more. Tough to the end, Five Star General's swan song was a win in the Longacres Mile Stakes at Emerald Downs.
His career is unique as he is not a gelding. This eight-year-old horse is retiring from the track to become a breeding stallion at Owl Hollow Farm in Virginia.
Bred by WinStar Farm out of the Bernardini mare Party of Interest, Five Star General is sired by WinStar's pensioned cornerstone Distorted Humor.
Jockey Joe Bravo, who was aboard Five Star General in the Longacres Mile, described him as a "warrior". His trainer Grant Forster called him "every trainer's dream". His owner Ken Alhadeff (Elttaes Stable) said his "continued display of endurance, desire, and courage has been breathtaking".
They are not alone in thinking highly of him. We do not see horses like Five Star General too often. He has been a joy to follow through the years and it'll be exciting to see what he can accomplish at stud.
